Cosmonaut Sergey Volkov who at that moment was at the International Space Station said a word to the participants before the campaign began. In his speech Volkov stressed how important it was to be a blood donor and called on all employees of the Cosmodrome to participate in the campaign:
- We all know how important and responsible the profession of doctor is and how important it is to have a stock of donor blood. For this purpose the Blood Service regularly holds donor days. I ask you respond to this call and give your blood for free, it will save people’s lives.
The work at the Cosmodrome is hard and dangerous, but even tight working schedule and overworking have not stopped the employees of the Cosmodrome in their noble impulse to donate blood.
This was the first Blood Donor Day held at the Baikonur – before that the employees donated blood separately, at different time. On 15 November 2011, 35 people took part in the campaign, some of them were giving blood for the first time, others not, and a few were even honored blood donors. All participants are sure that each person can contribute to blood and its components donation promotion in Russia, and being a blood donor is not only honorable but noble, too.
At the end of the Blood Donor Day all participants heard words of thanks from Head of the Central Medical and Sanitarian Station №1 of the FMBA at the Baikonur Vladimir A. Shkuropat and received a few souvenirs from the Blood Service.
The Central Medical and Sanitarian Station №1 of the FMBA is the only division in the region providing all medical care institutions at the Baikonur with blood based pharmaceuticals and blood components.
